Save Birds

My recent art projects stem from my fascination with migratory birds. Since childhood, after witnessing the rapid biodiversity decline in rural Germany in the 1970s, I have mourned the loss of their songs. Through my art and volunteer work with the Fatal Light Awareness Program, I address a hidden tragedy of migration: deadly bird-glass collisions caused by the illusion of mirrored sky and foliage that birds mistake for open sky. In collaboration with Feather Friendly, I design window films that break this deception, turning glass from silent threats into visible thresholds for birds.

Unlimited Editions - Water Flow

Unlimited Edition

I revisited my archive of drawings and photographs to develop the 3" × 3" designs shown below for this Unlimited Editions series. Now available through  Feather Friendly, these vinyl patterns can be customized to fit any window—either adjusted individually or repeated to suit larger glass surfaces.

For maximum contrast and visibility, the designs must be applied to the exterior surface of the glass. Installed this way, they create a clear, consistent visual pattern that birds can recognize while in flight, allowing them to perceive the window as a solid barrier rather than open air.

In addition to the Unlimited Editions, I offer designs individually and site-specifically tailored to your home, office or storefront. The process includes a scheduled site visit, where I learn about the unique architecture and the immediate environment of the building. I develop customized visual concepts for your windows and provide detailed renderings to help you envision the final result. Once your design is approved, it will be professionally printed and installed by Feather Friendly.

For a custom Artist Series commission tailored to your building, please contact Daniel Faria Gallery or get in touch with me.

DIY Workshops

Since 2023, I have been offering in-person DIY workshops where participants learn about the causes of bird collisions and practical methods they can use to prevent them at home and office windows, as well as outdoor glass railings. I teach participants how to design effective patterns on glass using vinyl film.

My visual inspirations often come from nature—one more reason that I enjoy collaborating with landscape architect Victoria Taylor, an expert in native plants for gardens and public spaces. Together, we aim to create wildlife-rich habitats in gardens and backyards using native plants, while ensuring that the birds attracted to these spaces are protected by bird-safe windows.

Email me if you would be interested in hosting or attending a workshop.

DYI Bird Window Protection

DIY Tips: Simple, Fast and Seasonal

Most bird-strikes happen during bird migration periods (roughly end-March to end-June & end-August to mid-November). If you are looking for a seasonal, easy to remove option for making your windows bird safe, here are my tips to break the deadly reflections for birds.

The scientifically proven method is patterns spaced 2 inches apart from each other and applied on the outside of the window.

Glass railings:
• Cover with tarp or wrap with burlap string.
• Write or sketch with oil-pastels onto the outside surface.

Glass doors & windows:
• Write or sketch with oil-pastels onto outside surface.
• Use a bar of soap to write or sketch onto outside surface.
• Install an outside-curtain outside the window (can be a sheer-fabric).
• Use coloured vinyl-tapes to make glass visible - glass-surfaces into smaller sections.

Effective Long-Lasting:
• Writing, or drawing with oil-Sharpies onto the outside of the glass surface.
• Cable and Lattice systems.
• Outside shutters (ideal for cottages that are closed off during winter season.
• Grill work.
• Mosquito screens mounted on outer surface on windows.
